The Princess Diaries

 Prompt 6:

The Princess Diaries is a classic movie about an unpopular teenager who becomes the princess of Genovia overnight. The main character, Mia, is portrayed as unpopular, boyish, and even unattractive, which when compared to society's standards, is the exact opposite of what a girl should be like. She isn't the dream girl we all hope to one day become, however, this highlights a separate part of our lives to which we can relate. We see how society treats females who don't fit into society's standards. Mia doesn't have the same interests, actions, or dressing sense as the television's "normal" girl. The movie sums those up to be the reasons why Mia is how she is in the beginning: unlikable and unattractive. However, when she learns that her father was part of the royal family, the movie immediately changes how she is portrayed. She gets a new makeover, new hair (contrasting her frizzy and curly hair), and new clothes, all of which fit the ideal girl. She has the life that every little girl dreams to have. So what's the issue? We don't see a change in her life. Mia gets her dream boy, but not because he likes who she is but for how she looks. She is still constantly hurt by others and even loses her closest friends. The movie depicts how society's beloved "girly" girl is not as great as it seems. We can see how damaging the set standard is to both sides of how a person chooses to be, and how an unmarked woman ceases to exist as Tannen claims.

  1. I like how you analyzed Mia’s character dynamic, and how she isn’t perceived by society in the ideal way. I love how you connected it to real life, really well done!❤️ - Prisha Pachpande

  2. I really liked your thoughts on how neither perception is healthy, and how they can both lead to negative self image. I thought it was awesome how you talked about The Princess Diaries, since the trope was kind of a common one in films at the time.
