Why People Dislike Poetry
I don't dislike poetry, I just hate analyzing it, which I guess defeats the whole purpose because there's no point of reading something if you can't understand it. I've dreaded reading poetry since I can remember. I think I almost cried when Mrs. Feldkamp said that at least a third of the AP exam would involve poetry. I initially hoped to put minimal efforts into those types of questions or just skip them altogether. Since I can't really afford to do that, I'll stick to just expressing my thinking and work toward understanding the layers of complexity that arrive with poetry.
The biggest reason I think many people dislike poetry (me included at times) is that it is too complicated or dramatic. For many people, poetry can seem too complex to read through. I have found myself at various points in reading where I get so irritated at the writer for not just saying what they mean. Instead of saying something like "she wanted burger king" it'll be something annoying like
Hunger overtook her senses, plaguing her mind,
Blaring signs of reds, golds, and blues stung her eyes
Royalty taunted her with vicious lies,
Just to find her with a glowing square that shone two new sides,
Wheat and ground harvest glistened in the light
All she needed was one bite
Mockery ran free shouting, Have It Your Way
You rule, yet you must always pay
But as this class has shown me throughout the last few months, a person's literary tastes can change if surrounded by good pieces of work. I hope that by the end of this unit, I will understand the beauty behind poetry and maybe even learn to love it.
